Annual Report 2021-2022

June 30, 2022

Dear CSC Family,

A year ago we did not know what the future would hold. While Cincinnati Shakespeare Company was optimistically, yet cautiously, making plans for an Autumn Re-Opening, so many doubts swirled in our heads. Can we present theatre while keeping our artists safe? Will audiences feel comfortable coming back? Are we still relevant? Can we still do this?

Our worries were for naught. The answer was a resounding yes. Audiences did return and continued to grow all season long. CSC did not have to cancel a single performance due to illness. And, a Mainstage season full of familiar titles combined with new talent showed the world that Shakespeare and the Classics are alive and well in Cincinnati.

CSC rose to a monumental occasion last season, and so did you. Your patronage and philanthropic support was vital as we continued to find new ways to bring Shakespeare and the Classics to life for all. You trusted us to make the right, often difficult, decisions about how to re-open safely. Your thoughtful philanthropy allowed us to continue delivering on our mission, while strengthening our community culturally, educationally, and economically as we all moved forward together from the devastating impact COVID-19.

Thank you for supporting Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through it all. We cannot wait to see you at the theater again soon.

Brian Isaac Phillips

Producing Artistic Director

To Our Friends and Supporters:

18 months. 579 days. Even through the uncertainty, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company held on; never wavering in the belief that live performance would return to the Otto M. Budig Theater.

As Board Chair, I am immensely proud of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s commitment to conservative budgeting, strong cash reserves, and the leadership of our world-class staff—all of which positioned CSC for a successful reopening of the Mainstage theater in October 2021. I’m proud that we honored our commitments to our audiences throughout the year. And I’m grateful to our wider network of donors, subscribers, and ticket buyers who stepped up and support CSC through generous philanthropic support.

Through uncertain months of closing and reopening, of scaling back and rebuilding, of pivoting and innovating, one thing is certain: none of it would have happened without you: our community of patrons and donors. In spite of the challenges of the past two years, I am optimistic for the future of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

Thank you so much for your support.

George Yund

CSC Board Chair
