Annual Report 2020-2021

Dear CSC Family,

As I reflect on the 2020-2021 Season, here are the things I will never forget.

  • Hearing the laughter of the crowds at our Shakespeare in the Park tour who were so delighted by the chance to attend live theatre again after months of streaming and digital performances
  • Receiving the gratitude of parents whose children, in an isolating time, found a place of hope and connection at our Virtual Camps and Classes.
  • Tuning into the Second Sunday Shakespeare Series on WVXU to hear monthly Shakespeare adaptations across Cincinnati’s airwaves
  • Seeing our team push the limits of their resourcefulness and ingenuity—writing original plays, making films, recording audio dramas, designing creative projects for community members, and finding every unique and delightful way to continue to deliver on our mission and our promise to this city.

These moments of resilience and relevance, of impact and innovation…this is what I choose to focus on and what I will remember about this extraordinary time.

Beyond programming, I am deeply proud that CSC’s new Board-led Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access put forward public commitments to DEIA and an ambitious five-year plan centered on DEIA within the Company. With the absence of traditional programming, CSC leadership had ample time to reflect and thoughtfully craft this plan, setting challenging but realistic goals and finding new pathways to success.

Thank you for supporting Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through it all. We cannot wait to see you at the theater again soon.

Brian Isaac Phillips

Producing Artistic Director

To Our Friends and Supporters:

It takes a sturdy vessel to weather the fiercest storms, and when it comes to responsible financial stewardship and reserves, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company had built a strong ship prior to the pandemic. Years of conservative budgeting, strong cash reserves, and discerning leadership put CSC is the position to ride out the effects of COVID-19 over the past year.

As Board Chair and a member of CSC’s Crisis Committee, I am immensely proud of the innovation of staff members who rose to every occasion to find new ways to fulfill CSC’s mission. I’m also grateful to our wider network of donors, subscribers, and ticket buyers who stepped up and support CSC through generous philanthropic support. One of the ways you did this was through the COVID-19 Recovery Fund. From March 13, 2020 – June 30, 2021, more than 1,600 CSC supporters gave to this fund to support our operating expenses. The average gift was $225, which speaks not only to the generosity of our patrons, but also the faith our community has in our mission.

As you can see throughout CSC’s Annual Report, this is a team that never gives up. They are creative, tenacious, ambitious, and bold. In spite of the challenges of the past year, and those certainly still ahead of us, I am optimistic.

Thank you for supporting Cincinnati Shakespeare Company throughout the past year.

George Yund
