Natural Shocks

A Staged Reading Of:

By Lauren Gunderson

Based on Hamlet’s “To be or not to be,” NATURAL SHOCKS is a 65-minute, one-woman tour-de-force play that bursts to life when we meet a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. She overflows with quirks, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns in American in your very lap. The play is part confessional, part stand up, and part reckoning.

All proceeds to benefit: Moms Demand Action

Following the reading, you’ll hear from Michele Mueller, Local Group Lead for Moms Demand Action in Cincinnati, who will speak a bit about the work their organization is doing to demand action from legislators, companies, and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. Joining her will be Hamilton County Democratic activist and volunteer, Ethel Guttenberg, whose granddaughter Jaime Guttenberg was one of the 17 students and teachers killed in the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

What is this project?

This is a national campaign of theater activism against gun violence. Modeled on her Inauguration Day 2017 project with her play "The Taming", Lauren Gunderson is making her new play "Natural Shocks" available for regional and community theaters, colleges, and high schools to produce readings the weekend of April 20, 2018, the 19th anniversary of Columbine and the day of the National School Walkout. She is waving royalties for these readings so that the proceeds can benefit organizations such as Moms Demand Action.

Hamlet, Act III Scene 1

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die—to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd.
